ScareTOUR, a site dedicated to providing independent reviews of scare attractions all over the world, last night announced nominations for the 2021 ScareCON SCAR awards, the annual awards which recognise and champion all aspects of the scare industry – from Halloween events to year-round scare attractions.

The nominations for the 14th annual awards see a range of theme parks and scare attractions recognised for their 2020 offerings, which had to be adapted, if they were even able to go ahead, in response to the COVID pandemic. In light of the unique circumstances of 2020, this year’s awards have a new category for ‘Best adjustment to COVID’, which sees the following attractions shortlisted:

  • Tulleys Haunted Drive in Cinema
  • The Walk at Over Farm
  • Warwick Castle After Dark
  • Pasaje del Terror – smaller groups
  • FRIGHT NIGHTS FEARSTIVAL – scare zones
  • The Dungeons – social distancing

The category of ‘Best theme park event’ sees many attractions from across the UK nominated:

  • Darktober – M&D’s
  • Scarefest – Alton Towers Resort
  • FRIGHT NIGHTS FEARSTIVAL – Thorpe Park Resort
  • Pleasurewood Chills
  • Howl’o’ween – Chessington World of Adventures Resort
  • Fear Island – Fantasy Island

After walking away empty handed in 2020, despite two nominations apiece, Thorpe Park Resort and Chessington World of Adventures Resort will be hoping that their four nominations each will increase the chances of success in 2021:

  • Best set and design – Creepy Caves Resurgence – Chessington World of Adventures Resort
  • Best costume and make up – The FEARSTIVAL Arena – Thorpe Park Resort
  • Best original concept and design – Scare zones – Thorpe Park Resort
  • Best scene / set piece – Firestarter (Creepy Caves Resurgence) – Chessington World of Adventures Resort
  • Best scare zone and roaming characters – FRIGHT NIGHTS FEARSTIVAL – Thorpe Park Resort
  • Best scare zone and roaming characters – Howl’o’ween – Chessington World of Adventures Resort
  • Best Halloween scare experience – Creepy Caves Resurgence – Chessington World of Adventures Resort
  • Best Halloween scare experience – Creek Freaks Unchained – Thorpe Park Resort

Alton Towers Resort also feature in this year’s nominations, picking up five nominations in five categories.

Now in its fourteenth year, the SCAR awards are held annually by ScareCON in association with ScareTOUR, a site dedicated to providing independent reviews of scare attractions all over the world. Following the postponement of the 2020 event, this year’s ScareCON is due to be held at Thorpe Park Resort on 10th – 12th May and brings together professionals from across the scare industry, including designers, owners, fans and experts.
