2020 isn’t the first time Alton Towers have faced delays to their opening weekend. In 2018 snow meant that the Resort were unable to fully open the theme park, and the opening of Wicker Man was delayed.

The Resort refused to be defeated however and laid on an impressive range of entertainment from The Beornen and Power Stilts acrobats, to the Alton Towers Traffic Patrol. We take a look back at our from 2018’s snowy opening weekend. #AltonTowersMagic

It's #NationalPuppyDay today, so we're bringing some #AltonTowersMagic to the celebration with Henry Hound!

Did you ever get to meet the loveable Alton Towers mascot?

Well somebody ( :sus: ) forgot to update this post with our #AltonTowersMagic moment yesterday, so now we have two today!

-------------

Have you ever met Hobman and Sally, two of the Fable Folk at Alton Towers?

We last saw them at the opening of the Stargazing Pods last year.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Hex - The Legend of the Towers, at Alton Towers.

Utilising the Towers ruins to great effect, guests pass through the Armoury and Octagon, before seamlessly arriving at the Vault ride building situated outside of the Towers. The ride system itself is similar to a washing machine, where the walls of the room rotate around guests in a drum, combined with subtly rotating seats.

How highly do you rate this iconic dark ride?

Tomorrow is Alton Towers Resort's 40th anniversary.

Whilst we will sadly not be able to celebrate at the Resort this year, join us tomorrow for a day of virtual celebration, as we look back at some of the Resort's biggest milestones.

In the meantime, why not treat yourself to a virtual ride on one of our high quality on-ride videos from our YouTube channel?

Alton Towers turns 40 today, so to celebrate we’re going to be looking at some of the resort’s key developments across its 40 year history.

First up is Nemesis which opened in 1994. Known as Secret Weapon 3 throughout development, Nemesis would be the first inverted rollercoaster to be built in Europe. The ride was designed by John Wardley who made sure the ride made full use of the terrain it was built in meaning, not only did it offer an exciting ride experience, but it also created a sense of theatre to guests watching the ride in the surrounding area.

Nemesis remains one of the highest regarded rollercoasters in the world today, and still offers one of the most thrilling ride experiences in the theme park, even after 26 years.

Opening in 1996, The Alton Towers Hotel marked the first of the Resort’s accommodation offerings, enabling guests to stay overnight at the Resort for the very first time.

Themed around the adventures of Sir Algenon, the Resort’s first hotel offered a range of themed rooms, which have been updated multiple times over the years with unique rooms regularly created to tie in with the latest additions to the theme park.

Have you enjoyed a stay in the Alton Towers Hotel?

What started as a trickle became a spring.

In 2003 the Paradise Plumbers invited hotel guests to enjoy a wacky afternoon at the Alton Towers Waterpark, which opened alongside Splash Landings Hotel. Previously named Cariba Creek, the secondary attraction perfectly complemented the theme park's offerings and helped solidify Alton Towers as a holiday destination, with slides, spas, and even a water playground! Despite remaining largely untouched, the Waterpark is a must-do for those wishing to extend their adventures.

Have you experienced the thrills and spills of this tropical paradise?

The 2008 season saw the arrival of some swashbuckling pirates at the Resort in what would become one of the best loved shows in the theme park - The Pirates Of Mutiny Bay.

Spanning over 8 years and under several different storylines, guests were greeted to a swashbuckling adventure in the Courtyard Tavern in the heart of Mutiny Bay. From the Quest for the Golden Parrot, to The Kidnap of Lady Victoria Sponge, it still remains as one of the key shows the park has hosted in its 40 years.

Would you like to see a return to this show in the future?

In 2016, the Rollercoaster Restaurant brought a decidedly Alton Towers twist to Resort dining.

Unique for the UK, meals were delivered via a mini rollercoaster track, with two tables having their meals go via a loop. Designed as a social experience in mind, the restaurant remains a lively and exciting experience for diners to this day.

What's your favourite item to have sent down the track at the Rollercoaster Restaurant?

In 2018, the resort would open the latest in the Secret Weapon series of rides - Wicker Man.

Built on the site of The Flume, Wicker Man was the first wooden rollercoaster to be built in the UK in 21 years. Guests were invited to join the Beornen's ritual and feed the flames on a rollercoaster combining theming, practical effects and a thrilling overall ride experience.

The launch of Wicker Man brought together thrill seekers and families for a ride to suit Alton Tower's ever-growing market.

Sir Edward England once maintained order throughout Mutiny Bay at Alton Towers.

Part of the Pirates of Mutiny Bay entertainment, his electric shipmobile came equipped with loud speakers, music and smoke generating cannons. Frequently interacting with guests and occasionally other entertainments teams, he was one of the Resort's most engaging characters.

Did you ever cross paths with Sir Edward England?
