I think a woody would be the perfect addition for TP in 2015. I know Merlin have it in their heads that wooden rollercoasters are perceived as unsafe but if there is ever a target market to attract a woody, surely the asbo teens would be well up for it. Scarey and thrilling rides sum up the whole line up at Thorpe. They can even scratch out names and write in permenant marker on the wooden supports! Seriously though, an out an back woodey that goes to the farm and back wouldnt be an unreasonable idea. Just a shame that it isnt on the MTDP.

I'm thinking Thorpe could move to a music based land or something. Rollercoaster like Rip Ride Rocket (hopefully a different manufacturer though), and a sizeable area that could be used as a concert venue.

This would in my thinking, work well for the market Thorpe aims for.

GCI Woodie wouldn't go amiss. I've always thought a wooden coaster would fit in pretty well at Thorpe. No idea why they've not done it...

back in 2006 the general consensus with management on the subject of a woodie, was that they have been changing thorpe's skyline enough over the last ten years, that what could generally be perceived by the locals as an unsightly wooden structure on that scale, would be going to far and be rather unfair on the locals.
at least that is what i was told under tussauds reign, the management has changed somewhat since then

As mentioned in JoshC's post, It is worth noting they have had conditional approval on their medium term development plan since 2010, which stated the installation of two roller coasters "one not to exceed a maximum height of 40m and one not to exceed a maximum height of 50m"

The swarm is 38.6M as we all know so it opens up possibilities.    if anything I would have thought this site is more out of view of the neighbouring public. 

Something like a mini hyper and using the length of the park to it's advantage, perhaps down the back of the old railway line.

first of all it cant go underground as thorpe is an artifical island, it also cant be wooden as thorpes ground is far to soft as colossus is sinking an inch each year. so its going to be either a B&M flyer or a hyper coaster (but maybe not a hyper as it would defeat the point of stealth...)

They can build underground because they can build tunnels for the coaster to pass through and other rides (such as Colossus) have landscaping, so there's no reason why any future developments can't either. They could fill in part of the lake and make use of any existing land, dig out and secure a pit to set the ride in and then build-up the dirt excavated from the site around the edge of the coaster site (like a crater).

Also, wooden coasters aren't as heavy as steel coasters and their weight is distributed more evenly due to the nature of the supports. They use many small footers to support wooden beams whereas steel coaster have chunkier supports that put all of the force into one area. It's also possible to build wooden coasters partially over water too (see the defunct Six Flags New Orleans Mega Zeph coaster).

But I can't see them building a woodie this time around any way.

The tunnels were a suggestion. It wouldn't be difficult to set a tunnel under the island for the coaster to pass though. I'm not talking about something as big as Oblivion's tunnel, just something like this:

The problem is the fact that the park is surrounded by a lake, so the water table is very high, meaning that any holes that are large enough for a coaster would cost a lot to build so that they don't flood. I read somewhere that some of the footers for stealth go 50 metres deep because of the soft ground.

Now on the subject of a wooden coaster the whole "Thorpe Park can't build a wooden as the ground is far too soft" is a myth as this image shows:


This genuinely was planned for Thorpe Park on the site where Saw is now

However Merlin won't build a wooden coaster at Thorpe Park so overall alee289 is probably correct that it won't be either of these things.

I think those plans were only leaked within the last year so nobody’s done one yet, to my knowledge.

Am I right in thinking that they could fit a B&M hyper coaster that runs past Rumba, Inferno, Canada Creek, have a turn-around and head back to the station that could gbe constructed on the island next to the Swarm and Stealth, etc...? It seems like a good stretch of space for such a ride and many others have suggested that Thorpe should get a hyper coaster.

They could probably fit one in, but fitting it in isn't the problem the height limit is.

Ah yes, the 40 meter height limit. Could Merlin change their plan and resubmit designs to the council for a larger coaster that's a little closer to Stealth's height? A hyper coaster would be ideal as there isn't a coaster at Thorpe (or anywhere in the UK) that offers a fast and floaty experience that a B&M hyper offers.

The only other sorts of coasters that could offer a new experience at Thorpe would be a woodie (which is highly unlikely), a flying coaster (unless it was something similar to Tatsu, it wouldn't really fit in with Thorpe), a Mack mega coaster (high speed lift and low, quick, intense turns and hills?) or maybe an Intamin coaster like Fahrenheit.


(this sort of coaster would fit within the 40m height allowance; Fahrenheit being 121ft tall)


That is unless they have a world first concept in mind?

Although I would love to see something like ^that, I doubt it will happen since they already have a ride with an over vertical drop...
