Mr P

I was reading an old (September 2010) edition of "Heritage Railway" Magazine and found this rather interesting article about one of the locomotives from the old park railway. It was in an auction during September of last year, whether it sold or how much it went for I don't know.

Enjoy :D

--EDIT--

Not regarding the Locomotive, but at least one of the carriages (in some form anyway) is still running at the Hayling Seeside Railway. The wording of the page doesn't really make it clear whether just the one or all the carriages are running on former Alton Towers Coach frames.

I think there were 2 locomotives, with another coming over from Trentham Gardens (along with the handful of rides they had).

I'm pretty sure one of them was far more prone to failure than the other, I have a feeling it was Altonia, and the other was used almost if not totally exclusively in the late 80s and 90s.

I think you are right in saying that eventually there were three locomotives at the Towers. The one from Trentham Gardens was the Golspie, which is now at the Amerton Railway, and I don't think it ever ran at the Towers but was just used for spares. I believe the rolling stock at the Hayling Seaside Railway are the rolling stock that came with this train, and I'm again not sure these ever ran at the park. (I can't recall seeing any pictures of enclosed rolling stock on the tracks at Alton, only opensided/open top ones)

The two trains that did run at the Towers were the Altonia and a black train (if I remember rightly) I've only ever seen a couple of pictures of over the years.

The Altonia originally was the only train running at the park from the 1950s onwards and I have a feeling the black train was added when the track was rerouted in the early 80s (no doubt a second train was required as visitor numbers increased with the arrival of the amusement park years). I also have a feeling that the Altonia was actually the more reliable of the two trains, partially as it operated as the only train for such a long time, but also pictorial evidence seems to suggest this as well, as almost all the pictures existing of the Alton railway show the Altonia on the track.
Edwardo..... move me!

Thanks for the info.

I've always thought it was a shame the miniature railway was lopped off in the way it was, rendering it almost useless and leading to its demise. If the route had changed to a circular to incorporate Towers Street, the top of Fantasy Land/X-Sector and somewhere close to the Towers themselves it would still be useful today.

I guess there simply wasn't the will.

Altonia didn't sell from what I've heard...

Dunrobin and Golspie (Trentham Flyer and Trentham Express respectively) were added in 1993 when the line was doubled up to add a second non-connected parallel track.

Dunrobin (Green I believe) was the only one of the two to run at Towers and is now running in Scotland...

Golspie is now on the Amerton Railway in Store.

As for the coaches, there were a total of 14 that ran on the railway throughout it's life, 6 coming from Lilishall Hall with Altonia at the beginning of the railway's life and a further 8 coming with the locos from Trentham. When the second set of coaches arrived the original six where sold off and dispersed far and wide.

Several of the frames are at the Hayling Seaside Railway.
One is under the Dilly at the Launceston Steam Railway - http://www.launcestonsr.co.uk/dilly.html
Several more are at the Old Kiln Railway in what looks like pretty original condition - http://www.oldkilnlightrailway.com/rolling-stock.php

Hope this helps,

can't say i was able to see much of the train while it was running, but i have found this old footage which shows briefly the train and the sky ride which eventually ruined it.
