Today, the shutters in front of the Alton Towers Resort DVD shop were closed, in what looks to be the end of the personalised video offering.
We reported back in 2009 that YourDay, the original brand behind the product, had ceased to operate. Alton Towers then took over the project and re-branded it as their own 'Alton Towers Resort DVD'.
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts to make it profitable, it seems that the last DVD has already been sold. If true, it will be interesting to see what the park do with the network of Fibre Optic cable which was laid down when YourDay first launched. You can find out what YourDay was all about in our special article.
Mixed feelings on this... I kind of which that they had made the effort to improve it, but it's one less thing for people to try to flog you on Towers St. :P

To be honest, I don't see how they can be sure that it's closed for good, and not just for one day. On all my visits to Towers this year, they've really been pushing the wristbands, so it would surprise me if they just suddenly closed shop.

Although most people have been moaning about the constant money grabbing (me included) this one thing I thought they should really push people to use. I can't see how TowersNerd can say it's closed just because the shutters were down for one day? For all we know it could just be a technical fault.
We'll just have to wait and see if we get any more info. Im down on Sun so i'll have a look.

Indeed, I have seen the place closed a couple of times this season, so it is probably a bit to early to speak of it's demise (again :P !), just yet.

The ATVC shop has been open from 9am - an hour after ride close on every day this season without fail.
Also to add, and to clear it up once and for all... ATVC ltd. is nothing to do with Alton Towers. It is a company set up by a number of original YourDay directors and operates as a contractor on site at Alton Towers. It has no relation to Alton Towers ltd. apart from the fact that it pays to operate on site. Much like Picsolve. The DVD system has never been operated by Alton Towers.

...and you are whom exactly?
AT DVD, Yourday, whatever you want to call it, has always been a problem and people I know and trust have on several occasions told me that over the past few years, that it hasn't been as profitable as they had liked. This is one of the main reasons it closed and reopened.
The whole idea of this product is massively flawed and I really do hope they sod it off once and for good! Just feel sorry for the employees caught up in it and hope AT do the decent thing and set them on else where on the park.

I wouldn't be surprised if it has closed down for good. I find it a nice idea that it videos you on the rides, but there just for me was never enough footege of you actually on the ride. When you look at picsolve's on-ride videography it is something worth paying for as it catches you at every point of the ride, which makes for amusing facial expressions :P .
Added to which, the cameras were never of a great quality especially in a nation slowly, yet willingly, going over to High Definition. If it were used on more rides and parts of the park at a higher quality footage then perhaps it could have survived, but with a failed wristband system that didn't always work (especially if made wet) it is sadly a project that will probably be never used again just like that part of Nemesis' queueline.

Screw the entrance fee, I have an annual pass!
I haven't been for a while, but if recent events are anything to go by, it does seem as if Alton Towers DVD will either be taking a major back step or even removed altogether.
This doesn't surprise me much, it was no secret that the service struggled to make a profit. I did hear rumours several weeks ago that the contractors running Alton Towers DVD had been asked to leave the site at short notice, and it appears that this may be the case.
On Towers Street this afternoon, some work was being done to the facade of the Resort DVD shop which may suggest that the shop is being prepared for removal.

The shop has undergone some major transformations in the last few days I have recently heard, to be honest.

I was never interested in this While it sounded good to start with the videos i have not been impressed
Don\'t like me learn to put up with me
It's quite sad really and I feel for the people who were running this project.
The idea in itself was a brilliant one but I feel it was just not executed as well as it could of been. The technology was out of date before it even started trading and they were seriously held back by the fact that there was no real on-ride footage of the customers.
For what it's worth I think that if the systems were upgraded with modern HD cameras and it was merged with picsolve to offer on-ride videos AND photos then it would have been a lot more successful.
I wonder what will come of the shop now. Slush Superstore anyone? :P

I like the idea, but didn't the old annual pass office just get refurbished...?
