Ahh right, I'm with you Joel. Is the system logged through SQL and queried every time a page loads? Does make a lot of sense after a while.

Still if this is the second system that uses way too much resources in the past year, then maybe the cons out way the pros of this system; But hopefully the new system will improve all of the current cons :P

I'm sure Joel will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the issue here was system resources - more that the forum software needed updating (and no doubt will do regularly in the future), but to do so every mod needs to be uninstalled, and then reinstalled afterwards, which is a lot of work. Therefore, the team are trying to pair right back on the number of mods the forum uses.

...at least that's how I understood it. Could be completely wrong...

Yes, this was our primary cause to review all of the forum features, and in doing so we found a product that was better suited to our needs.

The upside of the new product is that is uses zero resources of our own, so that was a major benefit for us on top of the fact it removes the need for us to apply so many modifications to the base forum software.

I'm currently writing the info and guide up for the new system, so all should be revealed shortly :D

Anything that reduces the work load on the server is good news. It will result in fairly small increases in speed and stability, but like a certain supermarket says "Every little helps"!

One thing I kinda thought about is having a "Like" instead of a thanks. So its a bit more like Facebook in the fact that instead of saying "thanks" to a post, someone can simply "like" it. I know some people will not like the forum getting more Facebook like, but I love the idea of liking things.

I'm just posting to counter the above idea. TTF is TTF and Facebook is Facebook.
Big Dave

Kinda thought my post would have that effect on people lol, but like I said, people dont always want to thank a member for a post, but simply want to say they enjoyed or liked it.

No no NO!

Just NO!
Big Dave

No because its a bad idea or no just because it like Facebook and you hate anything related to Facebook?

When I see something on the internet I like I often think yeah that was good, I like that. I dont get an urge to find the person who made it and say thank you to them, especially if its likely that the person who posted it may not be the original owner of that video, image or text. So therefore a "like" button would be better than a thanks, but anyways its unlikely to happen so meh...

The new thanks option is pretty much that though. I'd only thank someone's post if I found the content helpful/interesting, same as I'd only 'like' something on Facebook if I, well liked it.

A major flaw in the old +/- system was that on too many occasions people were 'plussing' stupid and pointless comments just because they'd been written by someone they knew, fancied, or had exchanged two words with on MSN the night before. The anonymity and simplicity of this new system takes some of that away, but no doubt we'll still see people thanking their friends, simply for that reason only.

A possible way to eliminate any favouritism/abuse would be to simply keep the "XX amount of people found this post helpful" count on the post only, with the member 'thanks' count being removed, as it's not really useful for anything.

That said, I'm not too fussed, just glad the +/- system has been shown the door!

There's a big difference between liking a post on TTF, and saying thanks to the member who posted something for going above or beyond, or for posting something special. Personally I find that I like 99% of the posts on TTF due to their constructive and friendly nature, however less than a quarter of those are posts which I feel the author deserves extra credit (like for doing some great research/RCT3 stuff/photos etc).

There's already a "like" button at the bottom of the page if you have the urge to show your love for a topic ;) just please don't drown TTF in these Facebook-isms which, quite frankly, are over-common around the web now and plain boring. :)
Joel

Tbh "liking" things has become a huge phenomenon with websites, and not just an Facebook implementation of it.

Sadly I never thought of it, and 'Thanks' was the first thing that popped into my head for nostalgias sake, so it's not likely to change, not right now anyway ;)
DiogoJ42

Thanks is a TTFism and it should stay that way! If anything, I think the icon is too similar to "like" from Facebook :P
But seriously, I love this new system.

EDIT: Just noticed, I'm on my iPad right now, and thanks counts don't seem to be loading :? Is that one of those "iPads can't do that  " things?

Quick question Joel, the favourite attraction profile option says "Favourite Alton Towers Attraction" but on topic view it says "Favourite Attraction"

Is it meant to be like that?

Yup as fitting the whole thing in the side bar would take up two lines, and looks a tad messy :)

Logical move, thus can you change the main profile one? As it intends my favourite attraction in the world is Nemmy, which it isn't :P

The thanks counts don't show on my iPod Touch, might be something to do with Safari? Or it might just have something to do with the actual new system, that it can't show on portable web browsers?

It doesn't say Favourite Attraction in the world on the sidebar either :). It's an Alton Towers forum, so surely the assumption should be that the favourite attraction is going to be one at Alton?

Picky much :P

Without further testing, I'm going to guess its a compatibility issue with Mobile Safari as I have the same issue with my iPad.

Again I'll pass it onto the developer to establish what is causing the incompatibility.

Ta Joel. :D I figured it was something to do with Apple being rubbish. ;)
