Just thought I'd share this.. This new "Premium Shoutbox", just seems to me to be a way to square-out the non-popular members, and is just a popularity thing. It's not because I don't have "access", just seems unfair, especially counting how useless TT Chat can be.

It seems that these days all TTF is about is popularity...

Anyway, thought I'd rant about it, oh well..
Got to agree with this. A lot of the time in chat there can be far too many conversations going on to follow properly.

Shout box was a good way to chat and keep things simple and informal.
Have a popular people shout box is rather divisive, especially when in other threads there is talk about people not being made to feel welcome on this forum. Just reinforces that feeling.

Bad choice :anger:

Upgrade ongoing tbh. Just a bit of fun...

I'd just like to take this opportunity to suck up to Joel and say thanks for getting a new shoutbox up and running so soon! :D
Joel

Haha thanks Diogo! :D

The new shoutbox seems to be all completed and running OK. I have tried to tinker with reversing it so that new messages are on the bottom again, problem is I can't get the scroller thingy to scroll down to the bottom automatically to show them, making the whole thing a bit silly (thats non technical speak :P).

In other news, I've rolled us back a version on the Facebook Connector. I had trialed the latest version which added some options such as notifications of replies and posts on the forum to appear in your Facebook notifications in tray, however that resulted in some disasters where anywhere your username was mentioned it seemed to notify you, also other random notifications that made no sense.

So as a precaution (and because I'm sick of random notifications flooding my Facebook in the test :P) I've rolled back the connector script to the stable last version.

As far as I can see the login and like stuff continues to work as normal, but if you spot any problems please let me know here.

Many thanks all :D

Probably just me being picky, but I find the colours of the shoutbox very washy and just various shades of grey. Any chance of making the white whiter and the blue bluer?

I can't help but notice a flaw... On an iPad, the old shoutbox would be a loooooong list rather than a box. The new one just shows as a small box, with no way to scroll down. So at the moment I can only see the most recent few entries.
I thought you said the new one worked with iPrats, Joel? :? YOU LIED! :P
Big Dave

There is a scrollbar, but if it doesnt work like it didnt on my old phone, just visit shoutbox.php should still work.

Edit: Oorrrrr maybe not as the case might be :P

It works fine with Mobile Safari, including iPads.

Learn how to use mobile safari properly then moan :-P you need to "two finger scroll" instead of one finger scroll.

So, tap with TWO fingers in the shout box area, then move your fingers up and down the WHOLE iPad screen to scroll up and down.

Pfffft.
DiogoJ42

Ah, ok, so THAT'S how it works.
Never mind.
Joel

You may have noticed some small preparatory changes to the old reputation system.

Before the outcries of horror and before everyone jumps to the conclusion that we're suddenly getting rid of it, I'd like to assure you that we are instead replacing it with another system that changes the way it works a tiny bit, and your rep counts will not be lost.

Full details will be released on Saturday about the changes to reputation and the system, and possibly some other improvements to hopefully please some people.

Thanks for your patience :D

Do you really need rep points though? Surely the reason post counts aren't displayed in the left hand section of your post is it's irrelevant and makes it a competition... ?

If you really wanted a thank system, couldn't you re-instate the old thank system WITHOUT the boos? So if a post is good, interesting or helpful you can thank. But if its not, you don't do anything. If its rude etc, you report. But neg reps/booing is open to revenge, abuse and arguments.

Just my thoughts :P

Well if what Joel was saying last night is true, the new system should solve that.

Pah, negative reps are fun. They are what make TTF better than all the other theme park forums.

Well, and because of several other, more important aspects that I won't bother listing right now.

Anyway, thanks again for constantly giving the forum heavy doses of TLC. :)

Thing is, with negative reps people just abuse the system. If a newbie came on here and said that SW7 would be a Vekoma coaster, people would ask for a source, this newbie would say "a friend that works at Alton", and then people will neg rep this person just because they are saying something that may not be true but is possible.

Another thing with neg reps is that if one member get a neg rep they will then hunt down the person that gave then a neg rep and do the same to them, and then this could go round in circles.

One more thing( :P ) if a member has, say about -20 reps, it's unlikely they will ever get positive reps from anyone due to them being perceived as a spam member. This could also drive some members with negative reps away from the forum, isn't TowersTimes meant to be about welcoming new people and making them feel at home? New members will do wrong, I did myself when I first joined, we learn by our mistakes and grow to be great members over weeks/months/years.

From what I was reading in chat last night the new system sounds good, and will be for the good, especially for those members with high reputations(such as you, Bill). But I'm sure Joel will explain more later.

I did prefer the days when we just had the "Thanks!" button introduced, as you couldn't really abuse anyone, if a member posts that bad on the forum then they can be reported or the Team can ban/remove them if needed.

I welcome this new system with open arms.

:)

Well, it's already been well discussed as to why the previous thanks system had to go (it wasn't a choice of features, it was because the thanks mod was badly designed and after so many records slowed the forum down incredibly).

Again, one of the reasons we're making this change today is that it completely removes the pressure on our server and database to operate the system, as it's hosted externally.

We will as ever review it's usage, and if it continues or begins to be used to the detriment of new users etc, we will consider removing it completely, and this new system does have some new features to try and help people act a little more responsibly, especially those with higher reputation counts.

With great power comes great responsibility. You may call me "The king Maker" from now on! :P
