Thought I'd try and start a definitive Flume future topic, like the Black Hole one, as it's getting a bit muddled up with replacement threads and re-themes :)

I think (and hope) the Flume will be within the next three rides to be changed in someway, possibly the next. It seems a natural evolution for me in the development of Mutiny Bay, with the area being created with a new flagship attraction in the first year, a secondary "alternative" attraction (as in not a ride, but an experience) in the second, and a re-theme of The Flume in the third or possibly fourth.

Could we be seeing a re-theme of The Flume next year? Yes, I think it wouldn't be outside the realms of possibility to expect this. It has been done before in 1994, when Toyland Tours was created along with Nemesis, even though that was easily the most substantial investment ever made at the park at the time, they still had the money for something extra. Air was built the same year as a quiet Adventure Land refresh. Also, has anyone considered that if they did re-theme The Flume, Alton might NOT want publicity for it? Firstly, the general public are not thick, and if it were being marketed as the attraction for 2011 would realise it's the second time in 5 years they have been sold an old ride "as new". Secondly, if they re-themed it on it's own in 2011 it would draw attention to what a clashing theme it was before. In a way, AT might wanna use SW6 as cover to "sneak in" a Flume retheme.

What could we get from a retheme?
I think The Flume could be a really immersive experience, and possibly was during the 1980's. In this photo, courtesy of ATA, it certainly looks totally alien to how it does now, but it has an isolated, romantic, classic-theme-park quality to it. Because Katanga had not been built yet there is no path up the side, and when you were on the ride it must have felt like you had traveled away from modern life and the theme park, which is surely the aim of any immersive attraction. In it's current guise, no attempt is made at any sort of serious theme, with people and paths and queuelines and maintance building visible almost everywhere. It's almost an "anti-theme", themed around the idea that genre themeing is lame and since everyone knows it's an old ride we might as well have a laugh with it.

Image

The first change I would make in a re-theme, is to re-direct the queue line differently from how it is now, so it doesn't curl round the lake and under the first drop. Although keeping it would be good if they replaced the power showers with water canons like on Battle Galleons in the queue, appropriately themed of course.

A full-scale Pirate theme seems the obvious route to go down. For me the model ride in this catagory to base it on is another Merlin ride: Pirate Falls at Legoland.

Image

Just because a ride has a story, doesn't mean it has to be a necessarily complicated one. Most of these type of water rides seem to follow the "you've been sent out to work on the loggery but oh no! something's gone wrong involving a monkey and gunpower and now theres a big drop!" variety. They already have the advantage of having an indoor building section that is criminally underused with just the giant duck! You could have a whole scene in there, involving cutting edge animatronics combined with holograms. I don't know what could be done with the meandering section in the woods, possibly a few characters scattered about that "warn you" about the danger ahead when you pass. I think the final drop should also be partially enclosed, as the Legoland one is above with a little scene as you go up the lift hill. And of course, new boats with snazzy theming that don't take on as much water when theres heavy people in them! The Flume could centre around new original characters, which could then be used to strengthen the theme throughout the area (but not the current Carribean rip-offs in the show).

Finally, I would move The Blade onto the lake that The Flume's final drop lands in, and seriously beef up the theming on it, with custom music (similar to Marauder's) and big geyser eruption effects on the lake. That would really complete Mutiny Bay for me and turn it into the premier area of the park, especially for families.

So, what do we all see the future holding for The Flume? :)

I'm one of the people who think the flume at Alton has completely had it. You only have to ride Storm Force 10 at DMP to realise how old, bumpy and really quite dull it actually is. As stated, I think even the general public will see through another retheme.

Rip it out. Drain and line the lake so it's all fresh water. By all means follow the first drop and last drop layouts but have something entirely new inbetween. Enclosed - dark water ride perhaps? Tied into MB of course - maybe an origin story for Captain Black as to how he came to Alton. This would truly establish Mutiny Bay as 'water central'.

I do like the idea of moving Blade here. This would make the area seem very alive. Could the access road be removed now that we've got the Haunted Hollow.

I would love to see something done with the flume next year. You're right STC that the only real route for AT is to go down the Pirate theme to coincide with MB. This will work and could look fantastic and really tie in with the area and complete it. Moving Blade is a great idea and would really round the area off very nicely - and also free up a nice bit of space in FV for a new thrill flat!

I actually dont think the Flume will be removed anytime soon. I can see it being re-themed so that it actually fits the themeing around it, and I reckon it may be due for some essential maintenence in the future, but I dont reckon it will get removed.

It might not be Valhalla or Stormforce 10, but guests still love it and I can remeber when I worked on there, that not many people used to come off complaining about the ride.

Corkscrew was popular and that was removed, but that is being replaced by a new coaster, I cant see the Flume facing the same fate in the next few years tbh.

Also if I am being honest, I dont want to see it get removed.

Basically, it DOES get you wet and is still thrilling enough to make people think "will I or wont I" during the ride.

Bring on a pirate retheme and clean up of the area. Definately think blade could be moved somewhere near the flume too.

I'm torn on this. The Flume has an olden days sort of charm which I would hate to see leave until totally 100% neccessary (Blackhole, Corkscrew). But a tarting up is in order.

In fact, a make-under is what's needed. Either some nice subtle pirate theming, or a return to the charming generic, but classy look of the old days. That old picture is lovely. More neutral tones. Animatronics aren't the answer to everything y'know.

Also, disagree with moving the Blade. Too predictable. Blade is the best themed swing boat I've ever seen. Well, the only non-pirate one I have seen anyway. Plus, don't have a clue what you could fill it's old trench with.
For some things there is no rational explanation. There is no way out. There is no happy ending to this story. Welcome to the unknown. Welcome to eternal darkness.

the blade pit could be filled with a a ride similar to Maelstrom. I would love it if alton were to get one of those, and it could be themed really well to fit in with forbidden valley.

I'd just like to see the trough above the main lake be lowered into the lake itself, with a small lifthill to get it back to station height!

Yeah, I agree with you there Ryan. It would also make the final drop longer. If it went for a pirate theme there is some really nice theming they could add to the lake too like the theming on Battle Galleons.

Cant see that happening anytime soon.

The loading and unloading on the Flume works fine as it is, so I cant see anything from the final drop to the turntable changing.

Get Mack in, add a reverser turntable to one of the drops, get the new Mack Pirate themed boats, spend £500k on theming and Bingo - Mutiny Falls is born!

Well I think Dan's pretty much hit the nail on the head there, good old Mack hey! :D

Something definitely needs to be done with the Flume, and I strongly belive that Alton Towers know this. By saying that it is in Katanga Canyon on the park map means to me that currently they do not want it to be related to Mutiny Bay as it would ruin their beautifully themed area. However there is no getting away from the fact that the Flume is in Mutiny Bay.

In terms of theming being added, I'd love to see a galleon on the lake, similar to the one used in the Battle Galleon's queueline. It would look very impressive seeing a huge galleon to the left of the Flume's channel in the lake, and would really add to the whole theming of Mutiny Bay. Then they can theme the dark section of the ride as if it was a cave with a load of hidden treasure in there, and try and put in some nice effects. A pirate theme for the Flume is really needed, I'm liking the current theme less and less every day at the moment, and I'm sure the Flume will receive the re-theme it needs in the next couple of years.

I personally think the only way I'd like to see a turntable in the flume would be if it was themed, whirlpool or something.

Theres no point it being there just as a feature if you get me.

I agree that the Flume needs to be rethemed, if not partially replaced. It does seem a little half arsed to retheme Merrie England (RIP) and not retheme one of the most significant rides associated with it.

Also, I love the idea of putting a galleon in the flume lake; it also could be used to 'redirect' the queueline. At the moment, as you know, the queue goes around the lake, climbing a small hill, before dropping down into the station. My idea is that the queueline would be redirected through the galleon, from a point before the access road is visable. Guests would board the ship, possibly themed to be a 'haunted' galleon, and move across the deck, through the captain's cabin (an opportunity for plenty of effects), before going back along the deck, and then down onto the gundeck.

On the gundeck, you would move around the deck, before exiting through a large hole blasted in the side of the ship, and crossing a bridge to the present queueline, ideally joining it before the drop.
An alternative to rejoining the present queueline would be to take the queueline into the hill itself, with the route themed to resemble a pirate/smugglers' base; barrels all over the place, maps and charts attached to walls, more effects, etc. This would then exit near the station, roughly where the current queueline levels off.
What, you were expecting something witty?

I dont know if there needs to be a great deal done to the ride to improve it. In my opinion, there will always be a place for a flume ride in established theme parks - everyone recognises them, they're great fun in the summer (and still fun in the winter when you try to avoid getting wet).

Realisticly, I cant see much more than the channel being given a bit of a spring clean - I think its starting to show its age pretty rapidly. Some newly themed boats, (getting rid of Imperial Leather thank god) and an updated station and improved indoor section could all be done easily by the park, and could make a massive impact to the ride.

If I got what I wanted however, I would like to see a flume ride replaced with another flume ride. The long middle section, where you are just meandering through the woods, can get very boring, and could dampen the impact of an impressive indoor section. Flume technology has improved, with turntables (as mentioned) and backwards drops - technology that could be implemented to give a brilliant ride. I would still like to see the final drop over the lake, but would prefer to see a more "ground hugging" ride.

^ I agree, technology for flumes has come a long way since The Flume was built. If the flume was to be replaced, I would like to see a ride like Ripsaw Falls in IOA. That is amazing, I can imagine a really imersive pirate theme for The Flume.

It would be cool to see Blade moved to the lake as this will make that part of MB look really animated.

I think it should be replaced, no doubt. You only have to look at the state of the station, the patched up channel and the uncomfortable bumps and jolts to see how out dated it actually is. It clashes with snazzy new Mutiny Bay not only because of its age, but its dreadful theming too.
If I'm honest, I liked the bathtubs to begin with, but the novelty of bathing on a log flume soon wore off.

A completely new layout is needed, on the main lake and through the trees. The only thing I would keep is the position of the drop, but they need to make it bigger. It really does look small and indeed feels small when riding. The queue should be re-directed so that it goes no where near the drop, just to keep guests wondering how big and steep it is.

Behind the lake there should be no lifts till the final drop. What I mean is, there should be a big lift right at the beginning (similar to now) then it should gradually take riders closer to the ground with a series of small, unexpected drops. This should speed up the 'winding round trees' process.

Not sure about the turntable idea. If the one in Valhalla is anything to compare it to then I think it just slows the ride down. Its the only turntable I have been on though, so I don't know if they have sped the process up a bit since then.
I guess the backwards element would spice it up a bit.

Just some short thoughts on the subject. :)

Oh and also, what about the Haunted Hollow? It limits them on space for a new layout does it not? And wouldn't there be a theme clash there?

The haunted hollow could be closed at the end of the day. Sure, its a recent addition, but it didnt cost a great deal - the themeing could be used elsewhere (or even in the new area for SW6 if it has a dark theme).

Im sure there would be a way to build a new ride without the closure of haunted hollow though :)

My favourite water ride is the Tutuki Splash at Port Aventura as it gets you very wet and you cant beat the drop it is just amazing. It has a good small hill before it and you go though all of these tunnels. It also has a larger capacity boat that could take lots more people at once.

Reverser turntables on Mack Log Flume rides are completely different to, say, Valhalla. They're quick and more reliable.
