Merlin Entertaiments have today announced plans to open a new LEGOLAND theme park in South Korea.

In a post on their Linked In profile, as well as via a press release on their website, Merlin confirmed that the new park will open by 2022. LEGOLAND Korea will be located one hour east of Seoul on the island of Hajungdo in Chuncheon, and will be the 10th LEGOLAND park to open. The Resort will include a fully themed LEGOLAND Hotel upon opening, and is expected to employ 1600 people

The new park will cost £205 million in total, of which £148 million will be finded by Merlin, and the other £56 million will come from LL Developments, the investment arm of Gangwon Province. Additionally the funding for necessary additional infrastructure adjacent to the resort will be provided by national, regional and local governments. The Resort will be fully owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments. Local government have already paid for the construction of a new bridge to Hajungdo island and undertaken groundworks on the site. Further retail and leisure offerings are also planned as part of the island’s overall development.

It seems Merlin are keen to expand their prescence in the growing Asian market. Currently their only attraction in South Korea is a SEA LIFE centre in Busan.
