The latest marketing stunt:
Thoughts?
Today, Alton Towers Resort announces a new recruit - Jack Osbourne. The adrenaline junkie has been employed to ensure that the theme park’s forthcoming attraction; due to open on 24th March 2012, is the most terrifying to date. Osbourne has been settling into his new role as ‘Director of Fear’ over the past week and is working alongside Alton Towers Resort’s Fear Experts to develop the concept for the attraction. He is already talking about putting a heart rate monitor at the attraction’s exit to record just how scary it is.
The new attraction will be a psychologically and physically thrilling experience, taking place in a dark, intense underground setting and will be based around the back-story of the original Nemesis attraction, which opened in 1994. As Director of Fear, Osbourne will be involved throughout the attraction’s development stages and will be the first to test it out, guaranteeing that every element is as scary as possible. The name for the attraction is set to be revealed in the coming months by the resort’s Fear Experts.
Osbourne’s fearless credentials placed him as the perfect candidate for the role at Alton Towers Resort. His daredevil encounters whilst filming Adrenaline Junkie have equipped him for the position, allowing him to call on all of his death defying experiences to shape and create a new type of attraction that is unlike anything else in the world. Osbourne’s most fearful experience to date - a caving expedition - inspired the new attraction, designed to spark a sense of terror underground.
Osbourne says of his new appointment: “I've now had my Alton Towers induction and already have ideas about how to get the blood pumping. I never thought I’d be wearing a tie again but I quite enjoy it!
“The Resort is loving having Jack around. After settling into his new office at Alton Towers Resort, Jack’s first task will be to ensure the chosen location is the deepest, darkest area of the Resort by venturing underground himself,” says Katherine Duckworth, Head of Consumer Marketing from Alton Towers Resort. “We are hoping that Jack will run his ideas past his dad, the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, famed for biting the heads off bats! There really are no limits in terms of complete fear for the attraction and we are confident that the attraction will deliver just that when it is unleashed in March.”

Heres my thoughts on the marketing campaign:
Balls to it will be a psychologically and physically thrilling attraction - they knew themselves they didn't pull it off last year so god knows why they'll be trying that again!? It's the same TH13TEEN concept with Nemesis instead of wraiths!
Although im looking forward to the new attraction, do they have to over hype absolutely everything they do?

I really do fear that Towers are going to lapse into the ways of SW6 and incredibly overhype this new attraction. That's one of the main things that killed Th13teen if you ask me; the ride simply cannot live up to the hype that surrounded it.
Granted, these sorts of publicity stunts get the park exposure. But that doesn't mean it should come with the risk of tarnishing a new attraction's reputation of "not living up to the advertising." Personally, I'd rather Towers "underhype" a ride, and it then exceed everyone's expectations, than overhype it and it not turn out as good as hoped.
There's nothing wrong with marketing the attraction. On the contrary, it generally improves the public awareness and pulls in more guests. But I personally think they could go about it a much better way.
To me it forms the impression that the park, first hype up the attraction beyond belief, get all the public and enthusiasts talking about it, have them all flood in to the park to ride it when it opens (Spending money along the way) let them ride it, and then not care what they think afterwards. As long as people visit the park at least once and spend their money that's all that matters. I understand that in reality that probably isn't how it happens, but that's how it comes across to me. I get the impression that Towers is little more than a source of income these days, as oppose to a magical experience for everyone to enjoy.
Anyway, I seem to have wandered from the topic of the 2012 attraction! Proceed as normal :P

Here's to pictures I took on Tuesday
There no work done behind the fences.
Do you think they will use the old Nemesis queue line for the ride?

No, why would they? Apart from the fact an access road runs in between them most of the Nemesis queue (apart from that up past the station) is still in use.

Actually some of the old nemesis queueline used to run on the other side of the access road with a large gate to connect the two sides. Dynamo took some of the old Nemesis extension queue when it was placed there and looking at the plans the new ride uses some of the space that was once indeed old Nemmy/ Dynamo queueline

The last time I saw that queue used was 1995. I remember been in it in 1994 when I queued for around 3 hours

Sorry to disappoint - this is a very, very, old shipping container which I don't think can be used anymore.
With rides opening late - from experience they're as rushed as the rides which open beginning of the season are. They still have a sort of deadline to get to, and can have even more pressure to open it when the parks already open.

Think most of us knew that that container was nothing to do with the ride lol. What is more likely is that the ride itself will come in a shipping containers and Merlin will simply buy a container off them, thus saving the hassle of having to ship it back to Switzerland.
Has anyone considered that this tender could not only be covering WLB but other works after that perhaps?
This would mean they build WLB and move on to gound prep for the next SW or residual works that we all know desperatly need doing at some areas of the park
I think the Ice Age 4D cinema announcement could add weight to this idea!
As for Jack Osborne - I don't have any problem with him. Interesting choice for a spokeperson but he is one of the most well publicised thrill-seekers (although not necessarily the "best"). I doubt he'll have a huge amount to do with the actual design of the ride though

Well, now we know, the "What Lies Beneath" moniker was a placeholder. Let speculation [s:xrxovk1w]commens[/s:xrxovk1w] [s:xrxovk1w]comments[/s:xrxovk1w] ...start! I think Catacombs is a popular suggestion and quite likely. But will the 'Nemesis' prefix be dropped? The name for the attraction is set to be revealed in the coming months by the resort’s Fear Experts.

Random celeb attached to ride? check.
Some headline grabbing filler story? check.
Using the phrase psychologically far too often? check.
You cant say alton aren't a 'green' company, recycling 13s marketing.

I believe Catacombs is the project name and so unlikely to be the final name (although not unheard of)
I expect the actual name will be announced early December based on when Th13teen was announced. The Surrender campaign also appeared at the same time as N:WLB.

"Hello, this is Quick-Sleb, the Z-list agency, how may we help you?"
"Hi, it's Alton Towers he--"
"You again?"
"Yeah, we're doing another froghopper drop ride and we need someone really cheap to match the ride system."
"How about Alex Reid? He's this thug that went out with Jordan for a bit."
"Nah we already used him, got anyone even more underwhelming than that?"
"Let me see... yeah we've got one of the guys from the Osbourne family."
"The talented dad who used to be in Black Sabbath?"
"No, the son who's not really talented at anything. Cheap though."
"Perfect."
