2012: Nemesis - What Lies Beneath - Part 1

Got an idea of how the Alton Towers Resort may develop over the coming seasons? Discuss it here.
I think next year they shud retheme x sector and possibly retheme the flume to fit in mutiny bay or demolish the flume for 2013 for a new water flume or water rollercoaster. Also possibly a new flat for the dark forest x x :D xx
I agree with two out of the three points there. X-Sector does need a retheme but it needs something along the same lines of what is there now i.e. secret government research centre etc. It needs to look like that because at the moment it looks more like an industrial estate. A water coaster would be great for Alton Towers, better than an Aquatrax in my opinion it would mean AT would have an up-to-date water ride as well as Battle Galleons and Rapids. The Flume is showing its age and I don't think it is worth a retheme. The Dark Forest really needs a flat ride, if a new flat ride is announced I would put my money on it being located in the Dark Forest or as a replacement in X-Sector.
X Sector needs work, but the theme is the best on the park, and Oblivion is the best themed coaster in the country by a long shot. Or at least was. All it would take is a million or two to get the place looking great again, and the medium invesment net year will completely revitalise the area, if indeed the ride goes there.
Yes X-Sector needs work but I don't think it is the best themed area on park. I mean Old McDonalds Farm Yard/Storybook Land, Forbidden Valley, The Dark Forest, CCL, Katanga Kanyon and all superior to the drab that is X-Sector all corrugated steel and pipes it looks like an industrial estate. Oblivion isn't that well themed I would say that Nemesis, Th13teen and RMT are better themed than Oblivion and that is just at AT. I would say it is fourth or even fifth not really the best is it?
When referring to SW7 I meant were it some kind of Water-Coaster it would fit there, but as I doubt that too - nothing is gonna happen to the Flume for a good few years - other than it possibly becoming SBNO.
I would say within the next couple of years AT may spend a small amount of money making it look a bit better to get another few years out of it but after that I think the time is up for The Flume.

I fail to see how Forbidden Valley is well themed. Granted, there is the Nemesis gun near the entrance and a few rusty looking buildings, but it has lost a lot over the years. Ripsaw is looking in a sorry state, same for Blade and all we have is a generic Fish and Chip shop and a few kiosks. Even the Nemesis monster looks pretty meh these days.

The only corrugated steel in X-Sector is on the roof of the lockers and the shed thing by Oblivion's entrance - hardly "all" as you say.

If we look at the present, Oblivion is a pretty poorly themed ride. In the past this was not the case. What saves the area is the drop zone, however even the Rehydrator has been ruined now. Its infuriating how little work X-Sector would need to look great again. If they painted the track, pressure washed the concrete, replaced the rusty wires and brought the themed bins back it could look good as new.

ALL areas of the park could benefit from tree removal too. Since they were planted in the 90s, all the many fir trees in the park have grown HUGE. You would be surprised how much theming trees cover up, if they were chopped back or removed a lot of the park would feel more open, light and airy. Most notably the ones at the top of Towers Street and along the shop fronts, along the Adventureland path, the Oblivion queueline and Forbidden Valley around Blade and the Skyride.

X-Sector could do with some tidying up, but couldn't we say that about most parts of the park? Although Oblivion does annoy me, the supports were never painted properly in the first place, especially the ones supporting the over bend curve, it look like they ran out of grey paint! But at least Ian Crabbe has realised that the Fanta sponsorship needs sorting out! Hopefully that will be sorted out for next season :)

On another note and back to topic, I personally think Alton Towers won't fail to disappoint next year (I think they have realised that they have made a bit of a mistake), I think we might be in for a few surprises and a great season! :D

I would say that they are probably on par with each other on theming level but I would also say that as an area Forbidden Valley looks better visually than X-Sector but this is mainly down to its location. Your right in saying that the flats in FV look poor but so does the ones in X-Sector. The Fish and Chip shop is something that I find annoying. I really don't like it at all it spoils the area. One thing I will say though is that where Enterprise has a little shack Ripsaw has a lorry. Where Blade has a shed with what appears to be blades on top Submission has a box. Now these are just little niggles but you get at what I am saying. I would say that FV is more pleasing on the eye because of the location where as X-Sector's drab-ness is more clear compared to FV until you get up close and personal with the Nemesis monster.

Yes you’re right. But the station building is extremely imposing as it is all made out of corrugated steel and the pipes don’t help too much with the effect. There are other buildings in X-Sector that are not made of corrugated steel and look fine.

Agree.

Alton Towers are not allowed to remove too many trees because of strict rules against them. Personally I love the foliage and the trees there they give a forest feel that no other park can give it all adds to the personality of the park.

I was having an interesting conversation with a certain indivual this morning, and he just so happen to mention that he has been told a few things about the 2012 attraction. While he claimed Alton are keeping specific details 'hushed' he then went on to say that the attraction will be started on/constructions begins in September 2011, and then put into a testing period. Whether you choose to believe me on this is entirely upto you, but I can assure you this is a valid source.

Has anyone managed to see the scaffolding that has been put over the 1st drop on the Flume, and over one of the walkways in Haunted Hollow? This must have happened recently, but it hasn't been mentioned on the forums?

Yes, I was going to get a picture, but for some reason, I didn't manage too. I donb't believe it's for the Sky Ride, and the shape of the scaffolding is an perfect entrance to the first hill/drop, making me have the assumption that some kind of building will house this drop.

Although could something like this be pulled off in just under 2 months? :|

Ahhh I see, I wonder what they're doing :? Although a lot of people in suits have been lurking around the flume recently, are we having the refurbishment we've been waiting for? Or are we getting our hopes up for pretty much nothing? Thanks for the info about it Voke!
Big Dave

Maybe they have realised that keeping the Skyride shut just isnt an option during the end of season events and they plan on doing work on it soon.

Or maybe they are going to paint the bottom of the flume orange and put a great bit vending machine over the first drop and turn it into a Fanta river!

I don't think this is true, as it makes no sense. I can't think of any ride ever built that's needed so long in testing that testing began the season before it opened, especially considering this will be a relatively minor attraction.
.Will

They will have enough time in the closed season to assemble and test the ride but starting testing so early? I would have thought even if they add a bit of theming it would take them till the new year. Then they won't start testing till about mid to late January. They won't do it over the new year/early January period.

I'm assuming whatever this is, its intended for the Black Hole site?

:)
.Will

I would say that is the most likely location. I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

This whole testing business suggests to me that this may not be a coaster but perhaps a completely new type of ride altogether...?

:)
.Will

As entertaining as rumours are I choose to sit on the fence a little with this one. I don't see why it would need so much testing. Personally I am just taking this for face value it won't be long until we begin to see some movement on park so I'm holding my breath until then. As right as Voke may be he could also be wrong.

I think I may have worded the whole of that wrong. What I meant to say is that the Attraction will be constructed during September 2011, and not tested until the closed season.

I shall edit my post above.
AstroDan

I categorically would not make any assumptions over next years ride being in the BH tent.

It's sadly not the impression I am under. Hopefully it is wrong, though.

It's safe to say that the Black Hole Tent will be used in some kind of format over the next few years. But for next year, it does seem quite unlikely!

If it ends up being the 4D cinema plans from last year that will be the biggest let down ever...although I suppose it can't be if it needs testing. :?

It must be some kind of flat ride then.
