I do agree the park is overhyped (not going to use overrated, as people are fairly reasoned to an extent) on TTF. I like the place but think Flamingoland is a better day out. As much as the staff at FL are dire, I love their zoo and coasters better.

Not even past the first paragraph and you've already contradicted yourself.
No, I have not. At any theme park I expect one or two rides which really make it wort the visit, regardless of the overall scale of the attraction. The question was phrased "What's so good about Lightwater Valley?" rather than "What is good about Lightwater Valley". As a result, the question is completely different. Lightwater Valley has many positives, but none of these are more than I would expect from a park of Lightwater Valley's infrastructural.

So you expect parks of Lightwater Valley's size to all have dark coasters better than Disney (not my words)?

No. But I expect them to have one or two attractions which stand out from the crowd, in the same way that Raptor Attack and The Ultimate do.

For example:-
Flamingo Land - Mumbo Jumbo, Velocity
Oakwood - Megafobia
Camelot - Knightmare
Drayton Manor - Shockwave, Stromforce 10

Wasn't impressed with Flamingoland. The staff were unwelcoming, and the queues just took the biscuit even though they tend to get the better end of the Vekoma catalogue.

I just seem to remember him being sat back away from the panel and appeared to be touching nothing, but I guess I could have been mistaken - I wasn't THAT close. Or is it like a pedal rather than a joystick?

I've always known they can be run on manual, but assumed they could be run on pre-set cycles if desired.

Is this a Mondial thing then? I note that Amazing Confusion at Fantasy Island is run on manual/joystick - would that be its only way of operation as well?

After the ride has been started, a Top Scan is controlled by two dials, one for the main arm and one for the cross, as shown below for the Top Buzz 2 panel. When the ride is in motion you don't need to be stood at the control panel, as typically the speed will only be changed a couple of times during the ride (or even just once: from forwards to backwards).

Samurai has a smaller dial between the two large dials to select from one of 6 pre-set sequences, I don't think Whirlwind has that feature.

Dracula's Labyrinth teaser.
Raptor Attack Live teaser.

Looks rather good, certainly of better quality than Alton Towers' scare maze teasers from last year. :hsmile:

Lightwater Valley have launched a Frightwater Valley 2012 survey, here.

Interesting questions, with a number of ideas there, and it's nice to see them asking the general public... well, mainly enthusiasts, for their opinion on the matter. They seem to be contemplating a longer Halloween event, or perhaps a separate fireworks event, Halloween event with fireworks on one weekend etc, etc...

I guess some would say the park isn't big enough to do a week long Halloween, or a separate fireworks, and that it wouldn't be profitable.

But I think the park will really ramp up their operations next year, in many ways. They're clearly trying to step up to play with the big boys, and I think next year the park will really start to reflect that. I think everything will be up for change. I can't wait to see what other new rides they have apart from the tractors! :D

Don't get your hopes up. Looks set to be a quiet year for new rides.

Having said that, plans change as much as the North Yorkshire weather, so you can never be too sure when it comes to Lightwater Valley!

What happened to 2012 being the biggest spending year of a 5 year plan?

Ah - this must be because they are saving all 2012 money for the 2013 Troy-esque GCI! [-o<
