Last year was a Gerstlauer Launch Coaster à la Anubis planned. This attraction is not built for unknown reasons. In recent days, people started digging, that the rumors of a new back and talked Launch Coaster

I heard about this from ECC (back in 2008 I think), and I think that the info about it came from Gerstlauer at IAAPA. It may just be that they have battled for a while to get the permissions to add the ride and planned the whole area around it...
So hopefully this is it!!
One of the potential rides at lego windsor for this season was to be a Gerstlauer launch, situated where fire academy is (I believe its site is shown as coaster on the MTDP - if that's still available online somewheres).

Be interesting if either park does get one!

Gerst launch coasters are pretty intense! Not what I would have expected from a Lego park!

I've heard rumour that this is costing €10 million and will be announced on Wednesday. :)
oldgitBEN

announced today, Legoland Billund in Denmark are opening a family coaster with a vertical free-fall drop for 2012.

website is here: click

This time the theme is based upon an ice expedition that stops on a frozen lake and falls 5 meters into a polar bears cave.

No manufacturer seems to have been announced yet, but its another merlin park so Im sure we can all make a good guess.
Glad to see it marketed as family ride and with a nice story to it too, who needs wraiths when there are polar bears?!
AstroDan

The fact that Legoland are the home of "kids rides", and they're looking at opening a freefall drop coaster says it all.

Makes Th13teen look even more of a joke if they actually DO get one of these.

Now there's a slightly (note my use of the word 'slightly') more thrilling ride that'd work excellently at a Legoland! Theme looks great too :D.

Look's like an Intamin Family Drop Coaster to me... :P

[/sarcasm]

Seems Th13teen's days as a 'world's only' are numbered...

and it has a back story, ouch.

Looking at their website they also got stumped with Spidercrabs this year too, but on the upper hand they also got the lego atlantis ride.

^It's not the Atlantis ride, it's just a bog-standard Sea Life centre like Sharkbait Reef or Chessington's Sea Life. Pre-dates Windsor's by quite a few years.

It looks good. This is certainly a steep in the right direction to broadening the Legoland market. But I wish they’d actually theme it to one of the many arctic Lego sets over the years rather than the generic Polar Land.

Part of the issue with theming it/anything to a specific LEGO set is that, from what I can tell, only current sets can be used.

As the availability of sets changes on a semi-regular basis, it's easier to steer clear and not be tied to something that'd need re-theming were a set to be discontinued.

Fair enough.

I just quite like the way you can tell when each area of a legoland park was added because of the Lego sets and themes around at the time. (Atlantis now, Vikings 2007, Rocket Racers 2000s ect. you get the idea)

It just seems strange that as there’s not a Polar set on the market at the moment they’d give their new star attraction a rather general theme.

Normally I'd make some comment along the lines of “they should have chosen a different theme to stick with what’s around at the moment” but a polar expedition falling through the ice is a really good concept. I suppose a power miners theme would have worked well but then ice is cooler Double Meaning FTW

ps. Thanks for merging.

As has been said, this seems like it will pack a little more punch than what I would expect from Legoland, but I'm only familiar with Windsor. Is the one in Denmark a little more family/older child orientated?

The track on the artwork certainly doesn't look like Intamin, but that could obviously mean nothing.

I do think that by clearly advertising what it will do kind of ruins the experience for many of the guests that won't be familiar with Thirteen - say what you want about that, it is extremely exciting when you have *no* idea on your first ride (not that I expect many here had that opportunity).

Great find this Sam and oldgitBEN.

Ooh, sounds interesting.

Nice to see one aimed at the right audience from the off. Interesting story it has.

Be interesting to se if they stick with Intamin after Thirteen's problems. If they do go with Intamin and BGE and Zierer pull theirs off, it will be interesting to se if Merlin stick with Intamin after that.

It is quite disapointing that the drop seems to be carving it's self into a niché and only being used in rides aimed at everyone, rather than a specific thrill or child-only audience.

With Thirteen the ride deliberately gives the impression its more scary than it is so that younger riders feel really nervous before ridding but leave feeling like they've achieved something. However as the marketing for Thirteen showed this level of intimidation and ultimate roller coaster non-sense put off allot of the rides target market. Personally I'm all for that as I like the unknown and darker tones of Thirteen but for Legoland they have to aim at a much younger demographic. So to encourage younger guests to ride they're being open about the fact that it drops by not making a big deal about it.

You never know, this might turn out to be another Zierer after Intamins massive trolley-up!

Legoland Billund are currently hosting a press conference about 2012, and have released the following concept images for the new 'Polar X-plorer' freefall coaster for the park's upcoming 'Polar Land'.

All I can think of is that this would be the baby if ever Expedition Everest and Th13teen got a lil' too friendly. :P
DiogoJ42

This is final proof that Th13teen is essentially a kiddy coaster when you strip away the hype.
Blaze

Not really. That's like saying Eagle's Fortress was a children's ride because it was the same ride type as thing Flamingo Land just opened.

Thirteen is a family ride, but it hardly takes another ride to prove it. This 'looking for proof' of Thirteen being a family coaster is all rather illogical and silly.

I'll be amazed if this isn't an Intamin.

Maybe BGW are stupid enough to go with Zierer, but I don't think Merlin would. Th13teen hasn't really had THAT many technical problems once you consider how technically complex it is.

Looking forward to this, will be fascinated to see what the second Th13teen will be like! And what the coaster section will be like! :D

Edit: missed seeing the plans! The outdoor bit looks no worse or better than Th13teen. Better themed. Let's be honest, the whole thing looks vastly more interesting and better than Th13teen.
