Wouldn't we all? But we know Alton will never install a "normal" coaster.

This really frustrates me. By confining themselves to "world's firsts" which are getting more and more obscure, they are ruling out the vast, vast majority of brilliant coasters available today. We all know a woodie would be amazing at Alton. Same with a B&M floorless, or an Intamin Blitz, or Mack Mega/Launched. They're not firsts, but could be as good as any in the world.

In regards to Mountain Flyer (terrible name!) I don't think it's the best in the world, because to me best is more than track and trains. Saying that, as a coaster it looks very very very very good. Insanely good. But something similar can easily be built in a different environment, as long as someone will put up the money. Come one LWV! [-o<

PS - Isn't Rita a "normal" coaster?

Rita was a European first (just!), but was last minute so doesn't quite count in the same league.

They've said themselves that with current attitudes towards rides, they feel that to pull in the crowds over Thorpe and Mandyland that they have to do something unnusual. A smaller scale normal ride isn't out of the question, but Secret Weapons will for the forseeable future do something daft or different. Not neccasarily a gimmick per se, but it won't be a normal coaster, and in a way, I'm happy with that, Alton is supposed to be different, so as long as they avoid tacky gimmicks and integrate any wierd features properly, then that's fine. But one day they need a woodie, no matter how many tools think they are unsafe.

Quite frankly, this is the best wooden coaster ever...

And Towers/UK in general needs a GCI...

I think Merlin rely too much on guest feedback sometimes... If one of the Merlin parks builds a woodie, it'll be after one of the non-Merlin parks have imo... They're the ones that would take the so called 'risk' that the UK perception of woodies have...

Build it and they will come and all that...

My 2 cents on the guest feedback issue...

Surely one of the gamut of emotions that that a good theme park offers with it's ride collection should be surprise? If every ride was chosen based on what guests said they'd like to see at Alton, then nothing that surprises people will ever be built...
Blaze

But it's no that they don't want one because they don't like woodies as much as steelies, it's that they for some reason think they are unsafe. Merlin would be open to building something surprising that market research suggests isn't going to be that popular if the reason it may not be popular is people don't currently find it interesting, but they wont if they think people will be scared away from it.

It's a shame the only high profile woodies in the UK apart from the obscure Megafobia are PBBs ancient beasts, it's probably why they are seen as unsafe. If more had been built, the unfounded belief that they are unsafe probably wouldn't exist and we could look forward to something like this being built over here.

We should just rig the poll! In much the same way that <rollercoaster> is rigging another.

Wood coaster gives you wood.

AstroDan

Lovely. But god, how dull are those trains!

Where are all the nice designs found on Joris / Troy etc!?

:)
Blaze

Only on Towers TImes would a ride like this be criticised for having palin trains when the ride is a huge terrain woodie on a mountain; possibly the best woodie in the world. :P

I don't htink this is about theming, Dan. :P
AstroDan

Of course it isn't, but some design would have been nice!

I'm glad the Asian theme parks have kept their tradition of innovative names/signs "Wood Coaster" :P

(I know the thread says Mountain Flyer, but that sign on the entrance made me lol! :P

In all seriousness... wow... I want one...

We have no right to argue with such beauty! I see it as understated awesomeness, like it's saying "Yeah I'm a truly orgasmic invention, so what?"
