A large fire is burning at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California.

The blaze was reported before dawn on Sunday on a sound stage at the film studios, Los Angeles fire captain Frank Reynoso told AP news agency.

About 100 city and county firefighters are helping studio staff tackle the flames, which have caused at least one explosion, he said.
Oh my god, thats bloody huge, makes Altons Skyride fire look minimal

I'm just really glad there are so far no injuries reported, and hopefully there won't be an aswell. Do you know what part of the studios it was? It could have been a part of the park, or it could have been a studio used to make film and television shows.

I just hope it doesn't cause too much damage to both the park and the studio.

The TV reports are saying it is the movie sets.

It was just on BBC News 24, they said it was the backlot, and the King Kong set is likely to be on fire.

It looked absolutely huge! Theres over 250 firemen there now.

That looks extremely bad.

Good news that no one is injured, but lets just hope they get it under control and that it doesn’t spread.

Oh right, I thought it was the Florida one. It's not so I don't care...

That fire is pretty huge.

Didn't get the chance to go there when I went California. :(

Going to go watch the news now then.

Apparently they are opening the park as normal with a few adjustments, even though the fire is still going strong.

3 firefighters have been hurt, only minor but have been taken to hospital, other than that there were no casualities. The building that was producing black smoke was full of video archives, which the firefighters tried to save. They suspect the fire may burn for another hour or so yet.

The themepark will open at noon. The main volt of the film negatives was not affected, fortuantely nothing ireplacable has been lost. No current sets have been affected, so there shouldn't be any delays for fims etc, except for one show which i didn't catch the name of which uses 8 locations, 2 which were damaged in the fire. The other building in the fire was the set housing the King Kong set.

The investigation into how the fire started is underway. There have been rumours of bombs and shootings, but there doesn't seem to be much truth in this. The fire started in the facade part of the area, obviously where facades are stored/made.

What's worrying is that cart loads of people go in and out of those film studio areas every 10-15 minutes, I was there last year. It's lucky that nobody was there at the time.

I can't believe how big it is.

Shame it's not the Florida one. There's a huge amount of cinematic history in those buildings!

According to the BBC News, The Back to the Future Town Square set (also used in Ghost Whisperer) was destroyed.

That's a big fire but it's good that it is now under control. It makes the SkyRide fire look like nothing. Fortunately people weren't in the buildings at the times or it could have been a lot worse.

Universal Studios Hollywood will be open today, Sunday, June 1, from 1pm. CityWalk will also open from 1pm onwards.

Our backlot tram tour attraction will be closed today due to this morning's fire affecting some movie production facilities. All other rides, shows and attractions are operating as normal.

The backlot tram tour will be operating again tomorrow, Monday, June 2.

We look forward to entertaining you at Universal Studios Hollywood
They seem to get around these things rather quickly though dont they :?

Well the trams don't follow a track or anything - they'll just divert them around the burnt bit. The rest of the park is pretty far out of the way from the studios, so it'll be fine there. :)
