Just been looking back at some older threads and found this...
Q19

mattbailey asked:

Seeing as different coaster types seem to have popularity phases, what do you think is the next "big thing" in coaster design?

Merlin Studios are working on that …. And I’m honoured to be involved!
Many have asked about the future of the Blackhole Tent. Are there currently any further plans that have developed in recent months?

Merlin Studios and Alton Towers have lots of ideas for the Black Hole tent. You’ll have to ask them if and when they might implement them.
Hmmm... Was the original SW7 not intended for the BH site? & Also does this support the rumour that there will be a 'Worlds first' element.

Yes basically. The original plans for  SW7 seemed to have changed in the last few months of the 2011 season.

I'd jump out there and assume that the next 'big thing' that Merlin Studios and Wardley are working on could have been SW7 (the original plans, not what we see now), it would certainly add weight as to why there was quite a late and drastic change to what we are getting for 2013. Perhaps they found a major issue (just like Air originally had) and need to lay it to rest until technology catches up with the times.

I'm unsure if this will have a 'worlds first' element, as all the articles that were written stating this were written during the time the original SW7 was in the making, although I'm sure Alton will have a different gimmick already prepared for this ride.

Nemesis94... that video is amazing....

I think that might be the gimmick (in a good way)... two roller-coasters in one... It looks beautiful the synchronisation, and how the inversions link together it makes perfect sense... is there any other coasters that do this? Obviously duelling coasters, but riding them both on one ride? This sounds world first worthy?

I would much prefer this to a vertical launch, it goes back to what John Wardley said about Nemesis, let the people who don't want to ride enjoy it to... it looks beautiful... I'm in awe

This is exactly what Alton Towers needs... I'm a gushing fanboy once again.

Having watched the frankly stunning recreation above, I'd have to say that my personal reaction to duelling/not duelling is regardless of whether or not it improves the ride experience much for riders, to see two cars go through that 'knot' section in sync looks absolutely sodding amazing to spectators.

I'm not sure how likely it is to duel, but I would be a tiny bit disappointed if it didn't...

I'm now fairly certain it will duel...the inversions seem placed in such a "duelling dragons" type manner....

Perhaps also a duelling dragon type mechanism, where the lift chains slow down/speed up to make the cobra rolls, in complete unison?

Even if it isn't supposed to duel there is no doubt that every so often it will. Maybe "I rode a duelling SW7" will become the new "I've rolled back on Stealth!" :P

Great video, I’ve already sent it to a load of my mates ;)

It may not be the most popular ride, but I think one of the best aspects of Spinball is that you get several cars chasing each other around the track. It makes it much more interesting to watch! This looks like it will have the same kind of effect, but on steroids. It's gonna be a great coaster to watch, let alone ride!

WOW The recreation is stunning. Can see this competing with Nemesis, proper world class coaster and the dueling will be so good for riders and spectators. Opening day 2013 couldn't come sooner.

Can I be the first to predict it'll be called Gemini? :P

My thoughts on the previous thread when people were disappointed with the chosen site for SW7:
*Optimism alert!!*

If done right - with landscaping and clever use of space - there's no reason why this can't be another world-class ride. There's certainly plenty of space for a compact coaster there and we all know compact =/= boring. If anything, Alton Towers are at their best when they have to be inventive with space restrictions.
After watching the *amazing* recreation (well done guys!) I'm glad that I kept the faith in AT designing something special.

I'm in awe of the designers here - to time elements so they interact with each other like that. One the same coaster. Just... wow.

This is just as exciting as any B&M prototype!

Nemesis94... I was not aware pornography was permitted in this forum! If SW7 is half as good as your recreation suggests then I will be one very happy person. I also think this will really put the UK high up on the map.

If AT don't manage to crowbar in a worlds first element who cares. It can be marketed as the first AT coaster to last more than 100 seconds!

What a stunning recreation!  Fantastic work!

The most positive thing for me, is that even as shown in the recreation, without any theming or detail on the station building, is that this ride *looks* great.  I was worried that it would just be a mass of supports and would look just 'plonked' into X-Sector.  But this recreation shows how it interacts with the sloping ground level in X Sector, and plunges in and out through the excavated sections.  Once you add in the 3 major theming elements, plus station detail, and, hopefully, other theming detail, not to mention the impressive look of the track itself, and the dueling cars,  I think this ride will look amazing.

It also looks very thrilling, but that much was clear from the plans.

Fantastic work from everyone involved, at AT and at TTF!

based on the plans and Nemesis94's 3D recreation, this to me is more than a ride. It is a true work of art. It truly is stunningly beautiful.

We must hope that AT decide to provide the right level of theming. Too much will kill the bold, intimidating nature of what looks to be a very imposing attraction.

If they do the loading like on Saw (two cars at once) surely this will make it alot easier to have the coaster duel itself? They could just have a pre-show for the second car (again, like Saw) that lasts as long as the first section of the ride, then as the first car approaches the second lift, the second car starts ascending the first lift.

At least then you wont have to rely on the staff moving fast enough to dispatch in time to duel the other car :P

The problem would still lie with the second train duelling with the first train of the next dispatch, and so on

Up until now I have yet to be convinced it's anything but a Gestauler, my personal guess a Eurofighter with a launched start.

This the first post on any enthusiast forum I have seen to make me think other wise.

Here is one launched X-Car in Germany

The fact is we've based the ride manufacturer on the noise report alone.  I find it hard to believe Merlin would let a document out into the wild so early that simply says, its a "Saw" type roller-coaster.  It might as well say not inverted.

As anyone thought about the coaster being built by S&S? they track style in very similar to the plans.
