Tip: Theres a small restaurant/ shop near the entrance of alton towers. If you go there, there are refill stations that are unaccompanied by staff, so you can take old refill cups with you
It's fine if your comfortable in yourself doing this, just remember its no different to walking into a shop and stealing something though. You also run the risk of being thrown out of the park for theft. £16 is a bargain if your an annual pass holder.

It happened to our friends the other week when they brought the old cup by mistake and they were refused a re-fill even when their pass had a stamp, so the system isn't fool proof.
I went on Sunday and wasn't asked to show my MAP at all to refill my capsule.
One thing I did find out was, is that you can't refill in The Smiler queue line kiosk.
