I think the quality of an area usually comes down to the atmosphere and theming, so it was a tough call between Dark Forest and Katanga Canyon for me - though I voted for the latter.

Both soundtracks are great, and both Thirteen and the Congo River Rapids are in my 'top five' at the park. Katanga edged it for me out of the two as Ug Land is slowly fading back into the midst in numerous places, and it seems that Alton's maintenance budget sadly won't cover that area in the near future.

Katanga Canyon for me. There's something about the atmosphere and themeing which makes the area spectacular.

I went for Katanga. It's really well-themed and has a quirky atmosphere about it. It's hard to explain, but you get great vibes whenever you go to Katanga. In terms of rides, though, I'd go for Forbidden Valley, but the theming there isn't too great.

Pugin designed them decades earlier.
