Ok it's time to see how good you guys really are :D

I've just received this text from a friend who's a fully qualified pilot:

Hi pal, I'm flying over Alton Towers tomorrow hopefully you can tell me or find out how tall, in feet, the tallest roller coaster is please.

Now I'm pretty certain it's the Towers he needs to worry about, so my question is this...

How tall is the tallest point of the Towers in feet?

Kinda jealous! Wanna go with!

Is he thinking of buzzing the park or something? I'm sure there are rules about how low you can fly anyway. If he came any lower than 500ft I'd call him reckless.

Haha, he needs to know the highest point in order to calculate how low he can go before he can fly. You're right there are rules but he needs this info to follow them.

Well as you say, the coasters are less of an issue than the Towers. I'd say the flag tower is the highest point, but I'm not sure how hight is actually is. Maybe around 100ft or so?

Since found the ground beneath the Towers is 615ft above sea level, so going on your estimate DiogoJ42 I'll add 120ft on top to be safe?

Many thanks :D Now to bribe my way onto that plane :P

well that depends on how he sets his altimeter ;) I would say do not go below 200ft AGL.

Well if you're interested, I've just received a text back from him:

"Airlaw says I can't be within 3000ft of the tallest structure at an open air gathering which includes theme parks if they have 1000 people or more"

I've skimmed my copy of Alton Towers: Past and Present, but can't find the exact hight of the Flag Tower in it. I reckon 100-120ft is a good guess.

Some of the recent released planning documents have the height of the trees on them.

Great pictures, thanks!

It's odd to see that the park really isn't as big as it may seem from walking around.

UPDATE

OK so since he went up I've dropped a hint here and there insinuating I wanted to go up too, and yesterday he offered to take me up tomorrow! :D/

I'll be taking my SLR with me for snaps and was wondering if anyone had any particular areas they wanted to see. Just put any requests below and I'll try my best to shoot them. :)

It would be great to get some shots of Th13teen from above, as the current aerial photos on Google Maps still show the Corkscrew. :-)
