No Ultimate Event for 2011

General discussion regarding the UK's No.1 Theme Park. Talk about anything and everything Alton Towers here.

From TT News:
It's been confirmed that The Ultimate Event will not return to Alton Towers for 2011. The event, held in May comprised of a day on park, followed by a Christian music concert held in the Air carpark. Traditionally, it has often attracted some of the largest crowds of the season.

A statement on the organiser's website read:

"Following numerous meetings and a great deal of thought and prayer, it is with regret that we announce that there will unfortunately be no Ultimate Event in 2011. Apologies to those who have been chasing us for dates for this year, but we have wanted to explore every possible avenue before this decision was made.

In light of this announcement we would like to direct you to a similar event, Big Church Day Out, where many of the acts from Ultimate 2010 will be performing. We will be supporting Big Church Day Out and hope that many of you can attend this year. For further information please visit http://www.bigchurchdayout.com

The Ultimate Event Team would like to thank you for your continued support of the Ultimate Event over the last 16 years. We do hope that we will be able to provide more Ultimate Events in future years. Watch this space..."

Alton Towers are yet to release a full calendar of major events to be held over the course of the 2011 season, but as TowersTimes will bring you any news as soon as we get it.
I'm quite surprised by this, especially considering the event's popularity and how Alton Towers were keen to promote the event themselves too. I wonder if this means we have alternative Alton Towers planned events coming or if it's simply a case of the organisers not being able to secure performers?

Well it was only one day, and there was always somewhat of a buzz on park with it being so busy. I only went one year when the event was held, and on park you wouldn't know anything was going on really, aside from the stage in the air car park!

I would imagine it brought some cash in though, with the likes of overnight stays going on to make a full weekend of it.

In general though, aside from Fireworks and Scarefest, there's nothing that's really been announced regarding park events for this season. It'd be nice to see something before end of season other than major paid concerts.
Blaze

I'm very surprised it's not on, but I couldn't care less. Mass Christian celebrations are not my cup of tea.

Aww, a shame. Those days, even though incredibly busy, were good. (No, i'm not religious).

A park full of christians is far more preferential to a park full of usual day guests, especially sun ticket days ;)

They've got a church, they don't need a theme park for a day.

While it never interested me, I suppose it's a shame to those that liked it. I don't particularly have a problem with these religious type days as such, although I'm not fond of big religious festivals at places like this, as it makes me feel rather excluded. Still, saying that they came to the conclusion after praying (in other words, they came to the conclusion after doing nothing) made me laugh a bit.

There's plenty of Christian artists that i've heard of. Maybe get a few of these and they'll attract the crowds? I've never heard of any of the acts that play the "festival".

Can we please steer the discussion away from your personal views of Christians? Cheers. :)

Do people think that this could be down to Alton Towers?
Reading the article it seems that they had to make a tough decision. Maybe the park wanted to charge a much more increased fee for the stage area.
I wouldn't have thought the organisers would have too much trouble booking bands to perform, especially as another gig has been advertised and the bands they use don't seem to be well known so should jump at any performing chance.

Is the park still restricted to the number of "Loud" days they can have? Maybe they are saving them up for other events.

This is bad news i was realy looking forward to this years event :(i have been to the past 11 ultimate events and all of them have been amazing, everyone on the park was in a good mood and there was a great atmosphire in the park and at the concert.

i know a lot of the big bands that used to play at the ultimate event have split up but there is plenty more good ones that would draw in a big crowd.

i thorght that Alton towers would like the organisers to keep the event going because im guessing that they make a lot of money and that its a good way to bring more people into the park?

Yep, it "was" one of Alton's biggest one day events, so it certainly brought in cash. As you can go on the rides aswell as the concert. So that's a big draw I guess.

I'm sure theres no need to worry, towers have had quite a good run with these music festival type events so maybe there will something else to replace it that appeals to a wider market.
Blaze

A real music festival?

That would be incredible.
Craig

After the 80's concert generally failing to attract the crowds they hoped for last year, I don't hold out much hope for any large scale park planned events. I have a feeling we'll just see separately ticketed Pink! style concerts.
Moley

This wouldn't have happened if they'd booked Faith+1 last year.

Hasn't Alton thought of organising an event that doesn't just cater to one audience? I mean a pink concert... great if you like pink but what if (like me) you don't? same with the 80's concert, and this so called "ultimate event",

I mean how about a fantastic music festival catering to ALL types of music... I would fall in love! just the one stage and have 2-3 main acts on one stage on the lawn at the end of the day. and many smaller bands playing at different very small stages throughout the park... these could be largish bands that are quite well established.. to even small local bands who are yet to be discovered,

they could have various genres attached to each stage and what'll fit in the related area. so a more rock/metal stage near forbidden valley, a drum & bass stage near X-sector, a pop stage near CCL.. and so on...

not sure if anyones heard of it because it's more local to my area but very similar to rhythms of the world held in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.
Blaze

With the main stage infront of the Towers, of course. They could have a second stage on the carpark by Air or one of the overflow fields, and as you say, a few smaller stages around the park, maybe with different styles of music to fit the area. I'd love a rave in the tent :D and maybe they could hide really small ones in the gardens for a more relaxed performance, with maybe one largih band hidden away in there, like Keane and Radiohead did at Glasto last year.
