sonic spinball, as in sonic the hedgehog?!
I find this hard to believe from a gamer and rollercoaster enthusiast point of view. If they did Sega would either be planning something big for Sonic or they are in desperate need of cash
(Which they aren't. Their third party software for Wii, Xbox and PS3 is keeping them going nicely). Do you have any idea how much Sega would charge for the licencing and title rights? It's not cheap. Plus Sonic deserves alot better than that piece of crap :P . Rita would be alright as a Sonic ride as it has the speed of which he is famous for. Plus Sonic Spinball is one of the underdogs of the Sonic franchiese. Why base a ride on an early MegaDrive/Genesis game from the 90's?

I think you're not quite getting what people's issue is.
It's not that you can't see the Towers because of Spinball... its that fact it ruins the view. Nothing detracts from a gloriously designed gothic landscape quite like a honking mass of bright red and blue track.

Exactly.. and with that in mind Merlin management are known to dislike the ride. It completely detracts from what AT is all about in terms of development, plus it is awfully executed. In terms of the overall experience of the ride (not the ride experience, that is quite fun!) I would say that it is a bit of an embarrassment to the park really.

Hmm, I would imagine then that short-term maybe we could see the ride 'toned down' so that at least it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb when taking in the view, and then longer-term either moving or, more likely, removal of the ride?
I do think the ride itself (as in ride experience) is something which bridges the gap between 'white knuckle' and 'kiddie' rides (i.e a family ride) and if it does get removed it would be good to see something with a similar function to replace it.

supposedly all being in place for the new season, didnt catch anything more than that, but it wouldnt be the first ride at Towers to have a Sonic themed section to it!
Thats not exactly true...
Toyland Tours RIP had a Sonic themed section

Hmm, I was thinking about this retheming of Spinball today and have a little idea.
Right next year as we know will be Alton's 30th Anniversary next year they could either have:
Idea 1
- SW6.
- New indoor attraction in CCL.
- Spinball Whizzer moved into Blackhole tent, X Sector given a spruce up.
- The Beastie either re-located or removed, Adventure Land removed for the 2010 season with it being changed into a different area by 2011.
Idea 2
- SW6.
- New indoor attraction in CCL.
- Adventure Land/Spinball re-themed and third attraction/show added in the area.
It cant remember seeing Spinball interrupting the view of the Towers. It is away to the side and doesn't really come into view of the towers from towers street. Or anywhere for that matter!
Yes I'll admit to that. Sorry I got confused with another park. It's just that normally when I go I hear someone from another group say "Lets go on that one" or something when they point to spinball. But this only tends to happen when they try to find another ride like Oblivion orRita but end up going on Spinball because its the first ride they see.

Most of it's hidden by trees though! The view of the towers lets you know you're at a heritage site & the noise of Spinball lets you know you're actually in a theme park.
As I said before, it's a theme park, expect to see rides

How about SW6 and a new Mack YoungSTAR to replace the Beastie? I think two coasters in one year would be a fantastically gutsy statement for the 30th year...
I like whoever mentioned the idea of the name just being shortened to "Spinball", since everyone calls it that anyway. Possibly with the sponsorship too. Interestingly if that does happen, the word "Whizzer" will desert two Merlin attractions in the same year.

It all depends whether Merlin wants Alton Towers to be the only theme park which people are talking about next year.
It would cost a decent amount of money, I've no idea if Alton Towers has that kind of money to spend.

That's actually a pretty good idea.
I also happen to approve of Mack

The Mack YoungSTAR is quite a big footprint. They would probably need to remove Spinball to fit it into that area!
I do love the YoungSTAR's though, great little family coasters.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but Spinball is open for February half terms. Interestingly, so are Blivvy and Air but not Rita. Does that count against Spinball getting a retheme?
It's also not open for winter weekends. It would seem like the obvious coaster to open, if you were to open one and it were available of course. Does anyone else know it's usual winter/half term opening schedule?
