Very small article in The Sentinel at the moment:

[quote=""The Sentinel""]
FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze at Alton Towers last night.

Six crews attended the fire at 10.30pm which is believed to have involved part of the skyride.

It took four hours to bring the fire under control although one pump is still currently at the scene.

A spokesman for Alton Towers said: "The skyride station in Cloud Cuckoo Land was completely destroyed by the fire.

"The park is open as normal today but the skyride will be closed for the foreseeable future."

According to Twitter they're working on a full article as we speak.

The BBC Midlands opt out on BBC Breakfast is now reporing the story. If as reported the Cred Street Station has been completly destroyed I doubt that the Skyride will be operating again in 2009 since there are only about 15 weeks of the season left.

Oh dear.

Think we can rule out hydrulics as the cause of the fire, as at that time of the night, I'm sure the systems had cooled down.

Aso people saying about the cable dropping, would need to be a massive fire to cause this, and I don't think the park woulf be open )don't forget it hangs right over the pirate place)

Some form of leccy fault, lights ride systems or something like that, perhaps someone was having a late night fag :P

Nothing on local radio

Maybe some of the TT members who work there can shed some light maybe some photos? ;)

This is shocking news so soon after last years fire on the same attraction.

I will await to see some pictures of the damaged building before i decide how big this fire really was as last year the fire was reported on all news programs where as this time it seems to have escaped the media so far.

Yes but lat year, It happened when te park was open. Atleast then people could see it and it was dealt with immediately. Now with the park being empty, it would take some time before people were alerted to the fire.

Oh no! This is terrible. Both aesthetically and... everything else. Guess I'll need to hit the gym before September. To be fair, at least it wasn't really a queue eater, but with SW6 on the way... uh oh!
For some things there is no rational explanation. There is no way out. There is no happy ending to this story. Welcome to the unknown. Welcome to eternal darkness.

Better fire prevention system needed in my opinion. Also There is no real motors or anything at the CCL end. Its all powered from the FV side, but the ride is getting on and things need to be changed much more than just a face lift.

Any news on the cable yet? I'd have thought Muteny Bay - Forbiden Valley should still be in place, but if it's dropped into the gardens it would be very bad indeed.

I thought it was a continuation of the thread from last year when I first saw this.

Not good news at all, sounds like there was something regarding the electrics to create this fire as the park was closed and no one around. What was the weather like up there last night? If damp, it could be wet + electrics not a good mix.

I've just been told Cloud Cuckoo Land, The Gardens, Hex and Rita are temporarily closed until further notice.

Why does the website only have 'skyride' unavailable if so many sites are closed?
Could this mean the cable fell?

A very unfortunate incident either way, very unhappy to hear. A great loss of money for Alton, no doubt. Thank god for insurance.

Hex is connected with the Sky Ride, I've been told that Fountain Square, Cloud Cuckoo Land and UG Land have all be blocked off due to the incident. So this is quite a big thing.

Very sad to hear.

Sounds like Alton are taking no chances letting people go near the Skyride. I can imagine hex is closed due to it being easier to close of the paths to Fountain Sq and Ugland.

The areas could still be closed due to the station building still being very hot and smouldering. Not good for H&S

If that's the case, it's a relief in one way but a shock in another...The fire obviously wasn't a minor incident if AT are restricting access so much.

Good to play safe with the H&S of the general public, though. Alton are handling it well.

Does this mean the whole of Cloud Cuckoo Land is also closed?

Sounds more and more likely the cable may have come down to shut off such a large area including the gardens but would they not have to close parts of FV around the sky ride station.

Do we know where the pods were being kept over night?

Any forum members heading up there today [-o<

---- Post Info Added ----

btw this is a staffmember who is txtin me this who is on duty now and is helping with redirecting guests around skyride st

---- Post Info Added ----

trying get pics sent but its not easy cus theres million management around but also lookin into afew mates iv got that work for cheadle fire team who mite have been called in to help out up there
Craig

They're probably still dampening down the area and want to ensure that they give as much space as possible for the fire service to complete their investigations. There's also a possibility that there's damage to utilities. With paths surrounding the area closed, other areas might be impacted as evacuation routes may be blocked too.
